Parent Question: What do I do when my child comes to a word she does not know?
There are several strategies we can use. The first is simply to tell her the word, although I suggest not being too quick to do that. Sometimes children will self-correct as they continue to read. Self-correction is a very important part of reading. Other times, you might suggest she skip the word and then come back to it later. Many times, children will figure out the word from context. One more idea: Suggest she rehearse the passage silently for a few minutes. Ask her what words she might find challenging. This is a way to improve her attention to words. Most important is that she sees you in her world as an ally in reading.
